Sea Buckthorn is largely confined to sea coasts where the salt spray from the sea prevents other larger plants from growing near it, but in central Asia, it is more widespread in dry semi-arid zones where other plants cannot survive the dry weather and topological conditions. In Asia & central Europe, it also occurs as a sub-alpine shrub at a higher altitude on the mountains. It is also seen in other areas such as river banks, where the sun light is plenty. Sea Buckthorn is tolerant of salt in its environment, whether it is in the air and soil, but needs good sunlight all year round for its growth. The plant does not grow in the shade or under larger trees.

The various  parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine for treating several ailments. The Bark and leaves have been used for treating diarrhea and skin disorders. Our Challenge – Part1

One of the biggest challenges facing our world today is consumer awareness towards the benefits of nutrition and nutraceuticals and their role in a healthy lifestyle. For a society that has long practiced a symptomatic treatment approach to fighting diseases, a curative, therapeutic or restorative approach to health and well-being requires a great change in mind  set, common practices and customs involved in and around how we deal with the delivery of healthcare and medication.  Yes, what all this calls for is a shift in mind-set, and at scale, at the grass-root levels.

This is neither a simple or easy challenge nor is it one with a definitive road map. In order to create a win-win situation between the creators and consumers of medical and nutritional solutions that deal with well-being rather than cure, it is important to drive this perception into society that one needs to adopt a mind-set of healthy-living and what their part is towards that goal. This however comes with a lot of friction in terms of reach, understanding and even adoption in communities where these perceptions may betoo strange for most to commoners to understand.

The challenge therefore, apart from the creation and distribution of affordable theraputic solutions is the education and facilitation that would drive the adoption of the mindset that right nutrition can be theraputic and would have long-term benefits. What should be addressed is, how one would identify ways of spreading awareness in communities that are significantly diverse in their educational, economic, social and cultural background.

This calls for a wide-spread health-renaissance of sorts, not only in those who already have sufficient education and well-being, but everyone. A renaissance that helps people understand and adopt a mind-set of well being through a nutritional and therapeutic framework at a personal level. One that is part of the lifestyle.  In order to make this a reality, there needs to be a collaboration between, medical practitioners, educational institutions, healthcare providers, media and the various government agencies that can support and sustain such an initiative long enough for it to become mainstream and thoroughly influence the life of people at large.

Palmyra Jaggery, a sweetener with great health benefits

Jagger

Palm Jaggery is prepared from palm tree extract and contains minerals and vitamins in a great concentration. Palm jaggery has been an ingredient in various food preperations and in traditional medicine throughout history. Modern science is finding new applications of Plam Jaggery and its many constituents.

Palmyra jaggery also known as Borassus Flabellifier ‘BF’ is a native of tropical Africa but cultivated and naturalized throughout India. The coconut-like fruits are three-sided when young, becoming rounded or more or less oval, 12-15 cm wide, and capped at the base with overlapping sepals. The chief product of the Palmyra is the sweet sap (toddy) obtained by tapping the tip of the inflorescence, as it is done with the other sugar palms and, to a lesser extent, with the coconut. Rubbing the inside of the toddy-collecting receptacle with lime paste prevents fermentation, and there after the sap is referred to as sweet toddy, which yields concentrated or crude sugar (gur in India) Palmyra jaggery is much more nutritious than crude cane sugar, containing 1.04% protein, 0.19% fat, 76.86% sucrose, 1.66% glucose, 3.15% total minerals, 0.861 % calcium, 0.052% phosphorus; also 11.01 mg iron per 100 g and 0.767 mg of copper per 100 g.

Benefits of Palm Jaggery:
A sugar substitute with low GI
A natural source of Vit B12 and iron
A natural sweetener with health benefits.

Palmyra jaggery is a nutrient-rich, low-glycemic crystalline sweetener that tastes, dissolves and melts almost exactly like sugar, but it’s completely natural and unrefined. It’s acquired from the flowers growing high on trees, which are opened to collect their liquid flower nectar. This nectar is then air-dried to form a crystalline sugar that’s naturally brown in color and naturally rich in a number of key vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including potassium, zinc, iron, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6. It is never refined or bleached like white sugar. So the nutrients it was made with are still there. That’s rare for sweeteners, most of which are highly refined.
