A first of its kind study to evaluate the longitudinal associations between plasma lutein and zeaxanthin concentrations, and incident frailty and changes in musculoskeletal outcomes in older adults, found that lutein and zeaxanthin may help mitigate frailty and age-related decline in musculoskeletal health. This may be primarily due to the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of lutein and zeaxanthin.
The Dublin based research team mined the data from the Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA), a long term study that has data from 8500 participants over the age of 50 in Ireland.
