The consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin by mothers during pregnancy may improve the child’s language and cognitive development in early childhood, according to a study by City University of New York and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University researchers.

The study also showed that the transfer rate of lutein from mother to foetus is the highest of all carotenoids and is the predominant carotenoid found in placenta and cord blood. The researchers also stated that lutein constitutes 60% of the total accumulated carotenoids in the infant brains compared to 35% in adult brains.
